A Cup of Coffee
I sit at the kitchen table at 7:04 a.m. (the a.m. is important), sipping the glorious dark liquid that breathes life into me every day out of my mug that declares me to be “Queen of Everything” while chaos swirls around me. I “only” have 4 children to scoot out the door this morning. Yet somehow those 4 often create the most amount of drama. How tiny humans can be so dramatic about things like their favorite cereal being gone is beyond me. It’s as if they were completely absent in the consumption of the cereal. This morning we have to also concern ourselves with curling hair because… school pictures.…

YouTube is not for little kids and the reasons we banned it
“Why did you sleep with your sister last night?” “Because I was scared Slenderman was going to come get me.” “What the hell is Slenderman and where did you hear about that?” “I saw it on YouTube.” Ugh. I will state emphatically…YouTube is NOT for little kids. This is not the first time we’ve dealt with the boogeyman from YouTube. For months, 3 of the kids couldn’t shower with the door closed and I had to buy a see-through shower curtain. Thanks, YouTube. As if parenting isn’t hard enough. I saw a meme floating around the book of faces the other day that talked about how we old moms win…

A Beginning
Once upon a time… I grew up thinking I knew how my story would go. I would finish high school, go away to college, earn a degree, get married, work a little, have a couple of kids and then be a boring adult. Eventually there would be a grand kid or two. You know, the usual life stuff. But that’s not how my story went. My story had many more twists and turns. And at the ripe young age of 37, I found myself getting a *whisper under my breath* divorce. (Isn’t that what people do when they talk about divorce? Whisper? Somehow even in the advanced year of 2019,…

Book Review: Ready Player One
It’s 2:30 a.m. and I can’t sleep so I sit huddled on the couch in my den reading under the glow of a small, silver lamp. Just a chapter until I fall asleep. Ok. Maybe two chapters. Fine, I’ll finish the book. 4 a.m. Time flies when you are voraciously reading the end of a good book. Ready Player One I know. The movie just came out. But you’ll miss out on the best 80’s references if you don’t read the book. READER TIP #1: Don’t watch the movie within 12 hours of finishing the book. I found the movie to be disappointing simply because it didn’t truly follow the…

Book Review: The Road by Cormac McCarthy
As a writer and full-time grammar Nazi, the first thing I noticed about this book was the lack of apostrophes and quotation marks denoting the speaker. It lacked as many elements as the post-apocalyptic world described by the author. Once I got out of my editor headspace and into my creative, I quite enjoyed the flow of this book. It was easy to become quickly and completely absorbed by the characters and the story. The main characters, the man and the boy, are not given names. (In my head I’m thinking, “that’s smart.” Naming my characters is as tough as naming children or pets.) It’s immediately apparent that the only thing…
